New Mexico Partners Program Facilitates ?Lessons Learned Workshop? in Southwest New Mexico

New Mexico Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program (PFW) staff held a meeting in southwest New Mexico on January 14, 2005, for private landowners who have accomplished restoration projects through the Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program and other landowners with potential project ideas. The workshop provided an opportunity for private landowners to meet and network with others interested in wildlife habitat restoration in the area. There were 20 attendees including representatives of the U.S. Forest Service, the San Francisco River Association, as well as interested private landowners. The group discussed wildlife habitat restoration projects in southwest New Mexico. The group discussed what works and what does not work in project implementation for a variety of different types of restoration. This information will be used in an adaptive management context to improve existing projects and future plans.

The PFW in New Mexico recently selected riparian areas of the Gila and Mimbres watersheds as one of the focus areas for Fiscal Year 2005. Attendees at the January 14, 2005, workshop were asked to provide input and ideas for the development of a format for a larger Focus Area Meeting in the near future. The Focus Area meeting will discuss the PFW program, focus area goals and objectives, and provide ideas on how to reach more interested landowners.
