First Interpretive Signing is ?On-The-Ground? at Hanford Reach National Monument
Pacific Region, November 16, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Five new orientation kiosks have been installed at strategic entrance locations to the Hanford Reach National Monument. The eight foot long kiosks feature a 4? x 4? orientation map of the Monument flanked by a 2? x 4? interpretive panel highlighting the separate units of the Monument. Each interpretive panel provides information that is site-specific to the kiosk location. Information presented highlights recreation opportunities, natural history, cultural resources, and science-based management programs to protect and conserve the Monument's nationally significant resources.

The panel design was led by Ron Crouse, Information and Education Specialist for the Monument, and Matt How, Region One Visual Information Specialist, with interdisciplinary staff at the Monument providing several reviews of draft text and layout. Many thanks are owed to those contributing to the beautiful photography that adorns the panels: Ron Crouse and Heidi Newsome of the Monument, local photographers Dave Standley and Mart Young, wildlife photographers Peter Wallack of Florida and USFWS's John and Karen Hollingsworth, Larry Ridenhour of the BLM's Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area, and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

This milestone is the first of many interpretive projects for Hanford Reach. We hope that the information provided will reward visitors with the knowledge needed to better enjoy and appreciate the wonderful resources and opportunities the Monument offers. The TriCity Herald newspaper assisted by covering the kiosk installation with a Sunday news article. The USFWS will also benefit from the increased visibility of Service efforts to conserve and protect the unique upland and riverine habitats of the Hanford Reach National Monument.
