Predator Control Project Pays Off in North Dakota

You can't raise many ducks in a neighborhood full of raccoons, fox and skunks. That's why the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Devils Lake Wetland Management District has teamed up with Delta Waterfowl Foundation and the Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation in a large predator control project. Trappers are removing predators from 10 sites of 23,000 acres each in northeastern North Dakota. It seems to be working. Before the project started six years ago, some sites reported nesting success rates in single digits, well below the 20 percent needed to sustain a population. Now, the rates are as high as 80 percent, and one site boasts a five-year rate of 70 percent.
