Pearl Harbor NWR Partners With The Hawaii Nature Center Wetlands Program
Pacific Region, September 30, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The Pearl Harbor National Wildlife Refuge, part of the Oahu National Wildlife Refuge Complex on the island of Oahu, has participated in a wetland education program with the Hawaii Nature Center (non-profit organization) for the past 11 years.

The wetland program is so popular that an adjacent State managed wetland was included to expand the program and still, there are over 500 children on the waiting list each year.

The program is structured to teach third grade students about the importance of natural wetlands to the watershed, Hawaii's endangered waterbirds, migratory birds, and humans. The program includes classroom time as well as a field trip to the Honouliuli Unit of the Pearl Harbor National Wildlife Refuge.

A special use permit is issued to the Hawaii Nature Center to conduct the program during the non-breeding season for the Hawaiian Stilt and Hawaiian Moorhen, both endangered species.

On average there have been approximately 3,000 students educated each year for the past 11 years. During fiscal year 2004, it was no different. A total of 3,346 students from 45 different schools (four Department of Education Districts) visited the Honouliuli Unit.

The same enthusiasm and interest for the program is expected for this coming fiscal year (2005) since all available dates for the program have been booked.
