Columbia River Gorge Refuges Near Completion of Conservation Plans
Pacific Region, October 21, 2004
Print Friendly Version
A Comprehensive Conservation Plan (CCP) is approaching completion for three refuges - Steigerwald Lake, Franz Lake, and Pierce NWRs. Managed as part of the Ridgefield NWR Complex, these refuges are located along the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge, and are referred to as the "Gorge Refuges" in the CCP. Initiated in September 2000, this plan describes the goals, objectives, and strategies that will guide managment of the refuges for the next 15 years. A core refuge planning team was composed of Ridgefield NWR Complex staff representing management, biology, and public use, and their work was coordinated by a member of the Region 1 Planning Team. An extended team providing additional input, consultation and review expertise included U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff members from the Regional office and local representatives from the U.S. Forest Service and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

After gathering input from the public during a scoping process, the team developed three alternatives for the management of the Gorge Refuges. These are described in a draft CCP released to the public for a 30-day comment period ending September 19, 2004. Alternative A is the No action alternative. Alternative B, the preferred alternative, would focus managmenet on restoring and maintaining biological diversity. Alternative C has many features in common with Alternative B, but would also seek to restore more of the historic vegetative cover present in the areas of the Refuges before the construction of the Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River. The core team is evaluating and incorporating information from the comments into the final CCP, with a target completion date of winter 2004-05.

The Ridgefield NWR Complex is headquartered in Ridgefield, Washington, at 301 N. Third Avenue. Ridgefield NWR is also located along the Washington Columbia River shoreline, approximately 30 miles north of Portland, Oregon. Conboy Lake NWR,located near Glenwood, Washington, is also managed as part of the Ridgefield NWR Complex. Further information can be obtaind by contacting the Gorge Refuge office at (360) 835-8767.
