Chicago Field Office Partners in Developing Management Plan for Dragonfly's Habitat
Midwest Region, September 1, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The Chicago Ecological Services Field Office recently conducted an assessment of larval habitat for the endangered Hine's emerald dragonfly (Somatochlora hineana) at Long Run Seep Nature Preserve in Will County, Ill. The assessment was then used to provide technical advice to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources on habitat management in and around potential areas that the dragonfly may be occupying.

The habitat management proposal provided to the Chicago Office included control of invasive species. Techniques being proposed included mechanical and herbicide treatments. While the control of invasive species is important to the ecological integrity of the nature preserve, methods in which treatments are applied may be detrimental to Hine's emerald dragonfly larva. In order to determine how to avoid impacts from management to the Hine's emerald dragonfly, we assessed the nature preserve for larval habitat and are treating them as biologically sensitive areas.

In addition to assessing the nature preserve and determining areas of sensitivity, the Chicago Office provided the Illinois Department of Natural Resources with technical advice on how to control invasive species in potential larval habitat. Methods that will be used in potential habitat include biological control of purple loosestrife, hand pulling of reed canary grass and common reed, and restricting herbicide use throughout the preserve to periods when precipitation is not in the forecast. This technical advice provided the Illinois Department of Natural Resources the ability to accomplish management activities while not impacting the dragonfly.
