Journal Entry   Back KENAI: Refuge Hosts Congressional Staff Alaska Region, August 16, 2004 Print Friendly Version Congressional Appropriations Committee staff Loretta Beaumont (House) and Leif Fonnesbeck (Senate) visited Kenai National Wildlife Refuge on August 16 to discuss proposed large construction projects on the Refuge. They were accompanied by Casey Stemler, Special Assistant to the Director (FWS) and Dr. Rowan Gould, Alaska Regional Director. The group toured the existing Refuge headquarters and discussed a proposed new visitor center. The existing building dates from 1978 and its 16 offices and a small visitor contact area are woefully undersized to accommodate 127 staff, interns, and volunteers as well as year-round visitation to Alaska's most popular refuge. The group also toured the Russian River area where Congress authorized, but has not yet appropriated, funding for a new cultural research center as part of a 2002 settlement agreement with Cook Inlet Region, Inc. The agreement ensures public access to Alaska's most popular sport salmon fishery while ensuring protection and interpretation of the area's unique cultural resources.
