Big Muddy continues Trail Construction
Midwest Region, January 14, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife refuge staff and staff from the Columbia Fisheries Research office worked together to continue construction on an accessible trail. The trail is located on the Jameson Island Unit of the refuge. This unit is located adjacent to Arrow Rock, Mo. Arrow Rock is a small tourist community that is on the National Register of Historic Places. The work on the trail was conducted on some surprisingly mild days from January 13-15.

Refuge staff worked together with fisheries personnel to lay a foundation of gravel over a geotextile fabric in order to make the trail accessible and all seasonal for visitors. When completed the trail will be approximately a mile long and provide access for visitors to the refuge from a parking area to the Missouri river. Most of the trail construction has been completed by volunteers.

The trail also gives the community of Arrow Rock a way to reconnect to the river. Arrow Rock was established in the early 1800's because of its location adjacent to the river. Over the last century through channelization and land accretion the once river town is now separated from the river it was founded upon. With the upcoming Lewis and Clark celebrations in this bicentennial year the town is elated to have this new access. The town plans many events to take advantage of this new opportunity to enjoy the refuge and the mighty Missouri river.
