No, the snake was not on the loose -- it was taking part in a science class for homeschoolers at Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery in East Orland, Maine, a part of the Maine Fisheries Program Complex. The science classes are offered twice monthly to area homeschoolers by local naturalist Tony Sohns, who is affiliated with the Maine Discovery Museum. Sohns brings his enthusiasm, activities and fascinating critter collections to the hatchery visitor center for both morning and afternoon sessions.

The classes involve about 25 students, ranging in age from four to thirteen years, and their parents. Fall classes run through December 1. Additional sessions are planned for winter and spring.
