An Eye on the World...

Perched at 4,791 feet (1,460 meters) atop the lava flows near Crescent and Hippo buttes, the Visitor Center building provides a fantastic view of the park. Mounted in a high window on the north side of the building, the camera views the long slope of the Medicine Lake shield volcano as it enters the Tule Lake Basin. Past the small western juniper forest, the Three Sisters cinder cones can be seen on the right near mid-frame. In the distance, the cliffs of the Peninsula and Petroglyph Point can be seen before the long ridges at the other side of the basin. At night, the lights of the small town of Newell and the scattered farms and ranches light up the horizon, roughly 20 miles away.
