Healthy KidsThe Minnesota Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) is a collaborative effort between the Minnesota Department of Education and the Minnesota Department of Health. The CSHP works with schools, school districts, local health departments, governmental agencies, and professional organizations to improve the health and academic success of children in Minnesota through the implementation of the 8-component CSHP model. The Minnesota Department of Education receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health and provide HIV prevention education.

Minnesota's Program In Action

Promoting Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Developing a professional development plan, consistent with the CDC DASH Professional Development Practices, to assist school and community members in providing comprehensive school health education aligned with national standards.

  • Creating district action plans to increase overall physical activity and healthy eating habits among K-12 students in school districts whose students experience health disparities.

  • Piloting an interactive electronic teaching session and tools for teachers in high-need school districts to support the implementation of policies and programs to increase physical activity and healthy eating habits among students.

  • Developing a comprehensive blueprint that is developmentally and culturally appropriate to strengthen quality coordinated school health programming for Minnesota schools and school districts.

  • Disseminating program assessment tools, strategies for effective tobacco use prevention, a curriculum selection tool, and school policy models to schools, school districts, and district Wellness/Coordinated School Health Councils.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Developing and disseminating model HIV policies focused on HIV prevention education, confidentiality of HIV infected students and staff, infection control and universal precautions to school districts.

  • Collaborating with nine institutions of higher education to train pre-service health education students how to address HIV/STD prevention using the HIV/AIDS Prevention through Education program.

  • Collaborating with the Department of Health and the Minnesota AIDS Project to create an online Webinar focused on HIV programs, policies, and practices.
