As a standard component of a park's general management planning process, park managers and planners pause to reflect on the very foundation upon which this unit of the National Park System was established.
At Fire Island National Seashore, several meetings and workshops over the past year are helping planners create these foundation documents. Horseshoe crabs come near shore on the full moon in May and June to lay thousands of eggs, which are a valuable food source for migrating shorebirds in spring and early summer. Occasionally, a perfectly-formed horseshoe crab molt can be found on the beach, shed as the young animal grows.
