Park rangers provide an orientation and safety message for groups visiting Sailors Haven and the Sunken Forest. |

A full-day Teachers' Workshop is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, 2009, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Registration is required, but the course is free. The workshop is open to any teacher or youth group leader planning to conduct an organized field trip to Fire Island National Seashore.
Workshops this year include:
- A Wilderness Hike
- Water Quality
- The United States Life Saving Service
You'll also get an update on Fire Island National Seashore's Traveling Trunk Program.

Did You Know?
New York's state gem—the garnet—may be found among the sands that comprise Fire Island's beaches. Due to differences in size and weight of the grains of sand, you may sometimes see ribbons of garnet and magnatite among the white quartz, as the sand settles on the beach.
