Fire Island National Seashore hires a limited number of temporary employees each year, and refills vacant permanent positions as workload and funding permits.

Several summer seasonal positions are advertised from late January through early spring. You may see a list of the latest vacancies for these and other federal positions on the USA Jobs web site at jobsearch.usajobs.opm.gov.

When you search for positions at this park, be sure to refine your keyword search for Department of Interior in NY (or narrow the search to NY - Nassau & Suffolk Counties), and select the appropriate applicant availability box.

Fire Island National Seashore positions may be listed with the location of US-NY-Patchogue or US-NY-Fire Island Natl Seashore, NY.

In order for you to apply for positions:

You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify.

Upon consideration of all qualified candidates, a tentative selection will be offered pending a successful completion of a pre-employment background investigation.

A valid state drivers license is required for most positions.

Ocean lifeguards at Fire Island National Seashore are stationed at Watch Hill and Sailors Haven beaches each summer.

SCA interns work with Fire Island National Seashore's threatened and endangered species program each summer, constructing protective exclosures around piping plover nests, and monitoring miles of beach to document the birds' progress.

SCA Internships at Fire Island

There are also opportunities to work at Fire Island through the Student Conservation Association resource management internship program. Fire Island National Seashore fills several wildlife management and biology intern positions in the spring (mid-March to mid-September), early summer (late-April to late-August), and late summer (late-June to late-October). 

These are non-paid positions, but a small stipend and housing is provided.
