Asbestos Project Milestones/Schedule

The National Park Service has worked closely with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in the development of a Remedial Investigation and Feasibility Study (RI/FS) for the Valley Forge Asbestos Release Site. The purpose of the RI is to identify the nature and extent of contamination (what contaminants are present, where are they, and how are they moving around) and to assess possible risks to human health and the environment, among other purposes. This was completed in February 2005.

Following the RI is the development of a Feasibility Study (FS) to evaluate alternatives for site cleanup (remediation). The alternatives range from no further action to complete removal, with variations in between. Each of the alternatives is evaluated using a list of criteria provided in the regulations (40 C.F.R. 300.430), which includes implementability, community acceptance, cost, and protection of public health, among others. The FS was completed in August 2006.

The FS is followed by a Proposed Plan that summarizes the findings of the RI/FS and presents for public review the National Park Service's preferred alternative for cleanup. Public comments are then compiled and addressed in a Responsiveness Summary that becomes a permanent part of the Record of Decision (ROD).

The Proposed Plan public review period occurred between September 22 to November 6, 2006. NPS hosted a Proposed Plan public meeting on September 28, 2006.

On January 18, 2007, NPS issued the ROD for the ARS. The ROD is available electronically on this web site.

The project is now in the Remedial Design and Remedial Action (RD/RA) phases, the end result of which will be the mobilization of equipment and implementation of the selected remedy.
