Geographic Initiatives (GIs) are a progressive and
focused approach to environmental problem solving. GIs embody many
of the concepts that EPA endorses in support of its current and
future strategic vision. As the name implies, a GI is any geographically
focused environmental activity which leverages the resources of
states, local governments, regulated communities, environmental
groups, and citizens. A GI emphasizes ecosystem protection, strong
science and data, partnership/consensus building, and environmental
justice. A GI, in an effort to emphasize these items, may concentrate
on non-regulatory strategies that complement an already existing
regulatory base. GIs encourage innovative approaches to the development
and implementation of mutually agreed upon environmental goals. |
