Mussels
The northeastern Gulf Coast is the home to more than 52
freshwater mussels, 27 of which are exclusive to the area.
Seven endangered or threatened mussels and eight candidate
mussels are known to exist in the watersheds of the Escambia,
Yellow, Choctawhatchee, Apalachicola and Ochlockonee rivers
(of Alabama, Florida and Georgia). Several of these species
are at such a high risk that one single catastrophic event
could drive the species into extinction.
