$42 million in the Recovery Act for Environmental Projects in South Dakota

The South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources will receive nearly $42 million in stimulus funds as a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, also known as the Stimulus Bill or Recovery Act.

The department will receive $19,239,100 in EPA Clean Water State Revolving funds, $19.5 million in EPA Drinking Water State Revolving funds, $1.7 million in State Clean Diesel Grant Program funds, and $1.5 million in EPA Leaking Underground Storage Tank Trust funds.

The Stimulus Bill funds are specifically designated for public wastewater, drinking water, and storm water projects; activities to reduce air emissions from diesel engines; or to clean up petroleum contamination from leaking Lewis and Clark pipelineunderground storage tanks under certain circumstances. There are guidelines that must be followed to obtain Stimulus Bill funds and strict timelines for awarding and spending the funds. DENR has developed websites to summarize some of the key points related to the Stimulus Bill funds.

State computer network and computer system outage planned

PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota state government’s central computer network and associated computer systems will be shut down on Sunday, May 17, from 3:00 a.m. to noon CDT for necessary electrical work on the Capitol campus in Pierre.

During that period, none of the computer services the State provides will be available.

Examples of services to be temporarily suspended include:

     ·  the State’s Web site and e-mail system

     ·  applicants for unemployment compensation will not be able to use the Department of Labor’s automated voice system to file for weekly unemployment insurance certification

     ·  hunting and fishing licenses will be unavailable online from the Game, Fish and Parks Department, but still can be purchased at sporting goods stores

     ·  campsites in state parks cannot be reserved online

     ·  student information systems will not be working

Otto Doll, commissioner of the South Dakota Bureau of Information and Telecommunications, said the temporary shutdown is necessary to upgrade and replace major electrical relays for the state computer system.

“It’s very rare that so many systems need to be down at the same time,” Doll explained.  “But the electrical systems being replaced are over twenty years old.  They must be addressed to assure our citizens uninterrupted services into the future.”
