Ostrava: Integrated Research Institute in Biomedicine

Integrated Research Institute in Biomedicine related to the University Hospital Ostrava, Czech Republic is established on two basic principles of western democracy: liberalism, which provides our region with a new vision, innovation and romantic enthusiasm at hard work of young people dedicated to science; and conservatism, which provides these efforts with a form, realistic shape and respect for traditions.

North Moravian region, where the generations of our ancestors worked very hard in the most demanding conditions of mines and steelworks, heavy industry and forestry, has been given a unique opportunity to dispose of skepticism towards utopia, ideology and political experimenting of the precedent decades. The area of medical research and education was greatly neglected under the communist rule, while the new democratic values have opened the door to new directions in this regard.

Very important aspect of the further development of R & D activities is also the close interdisciplinary and integrated cooperation among top academic institutions of the region, namely the Technical University Ostrava, Ostrava University and Silesian University, with the University Hospital Ostrava serving as the catalyst of these activities, being the largest and most complex medical centre in the region with the population of 1,25 mil inhabitants. Please visit www.fno.cz for more information.

Intergrated and interdisciplinary cooperation among academic institutions and private sector in North Moravia gives a rare opportunity to all parties participating in the sphere of biomedical research to flourish under the umbrella of Integrated Research Institute in Biomedicine. The development of R & D certainly increases the intellectual basis of our region, which has become very attractive for the investors from domestic and international private sector, generating innovation and patents with subsequent commercionalisation of newly developed biomedical technologies into practice and onto the market.

Clinical research at University Hospital Ostrava is focused on a wide range of medical disciplines under the close collaboration with foreign partners, namely McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada, University of Toronto, Canada, McGill University, Montreal Canada, Harvard University, Boston, USA and others.

Some of the many research activities of the interest are focused on hematology, oncology and transfusion medicine, hypothermia in traumatology, proteomics, genomics and pharmacology. The leading pipeline of clinical research is the use of autologous stem cells in the treatment of ischemic diseases in the limb, heart and brain, in orthopedic indications, cases of spinal cord injury and many others.
