The lectureship, which honors former NLM Associate Director for Library Operations, Joseph Leiter, Ph.D., is sponsored jointly by the National Library of Medicine and the Medical Library Association.

This year's lecture is being held in conjunction with the NLM's Board of Regents meeting at the Library, in Bethesda, Maryland. Staff of the Library and NIH, MLA members, and the public are invited. Refreshments will be served following the lecture.

Following are the title and brief abstract of Dr. Ratzan's talk:

Quality Communication: The Path to Ideal Health

With communication technology forging the cornerstone of the new economy, data, information and knowledge are often blurred. Communication can effectively develop a healthier dose of health. Yet, to be effective and advance our ability to promote health, the quality of communication is key for the audience to obtain, interpret and understand health information to make appropriate decisions. The presentation will offer background and strategies for developing quality communication. In particular, we will explore activities that maximize our progress with scientific prowess as we develop and refine the path for ideal health. Finally, potential ideas and actions for advancing health in the 21st Century will be explored with a particular emphasis on harnessing the power of the new technologies.
