Region 3 News Release: 04-251-NEW (osha-012) Fri., Feb. 27, 2004 Contact: Leni Uddyback-Fortson Office: (215) 861-5102 OSHA Launches Alliance with New Jersey Hospital Association to Protect Hospital and Long-Term Care Workers PRINCETON, N.J. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the New Jersey Hospital Association (NJHA) have joined forces to promote workplace safety and health for hospital and long-term healthcare workers. OSHA and NJHA officially began their partnership at a signing ceremony on Friday, Feb. 20 at the NJHA's offices in Princeton. OSHA Health and Safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations and employers. NJHA is a nonprofit trade organization committed to helping its 103 member hospitals provide accessible, affordable and quality healthcare to their communities. Through the statewide alliance, OSHA and NJHA will offer members information about emergency preparedness; work-related musculoskeletal disorders; tuberculosis; blood borne pathogens; workplace violence and slip-trip and falls. "By providing up-to-date information to New Jersey hospitals and long-term healthcare facilities, we can ensure a safer environment for their employees," said OSHA Regional Administrator Patricia Clark. "We look forward to working cooperatively with NJHA to help keep New Jersey healthcare workers safe on the job." A major goal of the alliance is to foster NJHA members' participation in OSHA's cooperative programs including the Voluntary Protection Program, free consultation services, and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program. Participating hospitals will also share their experiences and know-how in eliminating hazards and improving health and safety practices. The OSHA area offices participating in the alliance are in Avenel, Hasbrouck Heights, Marlton and Parsippany. Since 2001, the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 150 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
