Chavez Office: (617) 565-2075 OSHA and YouthBuild, USA Promote Workplace Safety and Health For Youth in New York and New Jersey NEW YORK -- Improving workplace safety and health for young workers in New York and New Jersey is the goal of a new alliance among the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA); YouthBuild, USA; the New York State Department of Labor's Division of Safety and Health On-Site Consultation Program (NYS Consultation); and the New Jersey State Department of Labor OSHA Consultation Program (NJ Consultation). OSHA alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships. YouthBuild, USA locations give young people a safe place to learn and grow, with programs like GED Preparation, Next Step Education and Career Opportunities, College Preparation, English for Speakers of Other Languages, and Construction Safety and Health. Since 1978, YouthBuild has rehabilitated over 7,000 inner city housing units. The alliance with OSHA, NYS Consultation, and NJ Consultation will add professional safety and health resources to YouthBuild USA's career preparation services. Eight OSHA area offices will take part in this alliance. They are Albany, Bayside/Long Island, Buffalo, Hasbrouck Heights, Manhattan, Marlton, Parsippany, and Tarrytown. "This alliance is an example of Secretary Chao's commitment to find cooperative ways to improve health and safety for all workers," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator in New York. "We want to help educate young workers to recognize and avoid hazards on the job." YouthBuild, USA is the national nonprofit support center and intermediary for the YouthBuild movement that helps low-income young people rebuild their communities and lead responsible lives. Nationally, there are 200 YouthBuild, USA locations empowering over 6,000 young people. In New York and New Jersey, 20 locations serve over 600 low-income youths. A team from OSHA, YouthBuild, USA, NYS Consultation and NJ Consultation will develop an action plan and will identify the roles and responsibilities of the participants. The alliance will remain in effect for two years, and will share information on activities, and results in achieving its goals. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is dedicated to saving lives, preventing injuries and illnesses, and protecting America's workers.
