Chavez Phone: (617) 565-2075 OSHA Announces New Alliance To Foster Job Safety For Young New Yorkers NEW YORK -- Improving workplace safety and health for young workers in the Empire State is the goal of a new alliance among the New York State Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs, the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the New York State Department of Labor's Division of Safety and Health On-Site Consultation Program (NYS Consultation). OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships. Eight OSHA area offices will take part in the alliance. They are in Albany, Avenel, Buffalo, Long Island, Bayside, Manhattan, Syracuse and Tarrytown. "This alliance is an example of Secretary Elaine L. Chao's commitment to find cooperative ways to improve health and safety for all workers," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator in New York. "Its focus is on educating young workers to recognize and avoid hazards on the job." The mission of the New York State Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. The clubs provide young people with a safe place to learn and grow, including programs such as career exploration and mentoring for teens, and a comprehensive program that teaches young people effective job-hunting techniques and helps them develop skills to be successful on the job. The alliance with OSHA and the N.Y. state program will add professional safety and health resources to the Boys and Girls Clubs' career preparation services. Through this alliance, young workers will learn about workplace safety and health, in general industry and construction, from safety and health professionals. OSHA will provide 10-hour construction and general industry safety and health courses and will assist Boys and Girls Clubs representatives to become certified trainers through the OSHA Education Centers located in New York. A team with representatives from OSHA, the Boys and Girls Clubs and NYS Consultation will develop an action plan and working procedures and will identify the roles and responsibilities of the participants. They will share information on activities and results in achieving the goals of the alliance, which will remain in effect for two years. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is dedicated to saving lives, preventing injuries and illnesses, and protecting America's workers.
