I. Alliance Background

Alliance Overview


Primary goals of the alliance are to develop relationships with the Hispanic community, to identify specific safety related topics and provide Spanish language safety training for employers and employees in the construction industry.

Implementation Team Members

II. Implementation Team Meetings

Implementation team meeting are conducted by conference calls in conjunction with the organization of the OSHA 10 Hour courses and during separated alliance evaluation meetings. The last meeting was July 26, 2007.

III. Activities and Products

These report summaries alliance activities since March 22, 2006 through to July 30, 2007.

Alliance Activity.

Primary activity has been to provide Spanish language OSHA 10 hour courses in construction. The initial course was provided through the joint efforts of OSHA’s Calumet City, Chicago North and Aurora Area Offices. Subsequent OSHA 10 hour courses were presented in conjunction with the City of Chicago’s Truman College through a DCEO grant. Additional networking with the Hispanic community was through attendance at the 2005 and 2006 HACIA awards banquets.

Alliance Products.

To date, the materials used in the Spanish language OSHA 10 hour courses has been a combination of existing Power Point presentations, videos available through the OSHA Training Institute, and materials developed by the OSHA Area Offices and Truman College.

IV. Results

Through the alliance, Spanish language safety training has been made available to members of HACIA and relationships with OSHA, HACIA, and Truman College have developed. Although the alliance specially focuses on safety training in the construction industry additional Spanish language training in General Industry has evolved through relationships with Truman College, the OSHA Education Center at NIU and the UIC Department of Public Health. The development and presentation of additional Spanish language training is ongoing.

V. Upcoming Milestones

With the expiration of the DECO grant, it is likely future OSHA 10 Hour courses will be presented jointly by the Chicago Area OSHA offices and will utilize available Illinois On-Site Consultation resources. An OSHA 10 Hour course has been tentatively scheduled for the October 2007. The In addition, HACIA will survey their membership and identify individual topics of interest for short (one / two hour) presentations to be given during regular business meetings.

It is anticipated the alliance with HACIA, DCEO On-Site Consultation and the Chicago area OSHA offices will be renewed during 2007.
