NLM's History of Medicine Division is "Celebrating the American Medical Record" as part of American Archives Month, with a web site http://www.nlm.nih.gov/hmd/collections/archives/dmp/archivesmonth2008/index.html . The site highlights many of the Library's online exhibits of American medical history based on archives and manuscripts.

"Celebrating the American Medical Record" includes the on-line exhibits "That Girl there is a Doctor in Medicine," featuring archival holdings that document the life of Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to complete a course of study at a medical college and receive a M.D.; "Joshua Lederberg: Biomedical Science and the Public Interest" on how a Nobel Prize winning scientist bridged the divide between science, society, and politics during the second half of the twentieth century; and "AIDS Ephemera," an exhibit that spotlights NLM's collection of comics, booklets, pamphlets, posters, cards, and buttons produced by government and private organizations to educate the public about AIDS. American Archives Month is a collaborative effort by professional organizations and repositories around the nation to highlight the importance of records of enduring value. Archivists are professionals who assess, collect, organize, preserve, maintain control of, and provide access to information that has lasting value, and they help people find and understand the information they need in those records.
