Recovery Act Funds for Administrative Supplements Providing Summer Research Experiences for Students and Science Educators (NOT-OD-09-060)

National Library of Medicine

Purpose

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) offers an opportunity for administrative grant supplements that provide summer research experiences for students and science educators, to researchers who have active grants from NLM. Applications will be reviewed and selected for funding each month. Deadlines for each review are April 15, 2009, May 15, 2009, June 15, 2009, April 1, 2010, May 1, 2010, and June 1, 2010.

Administrative supplements for summer research will be funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act), signed into law by President Obama on February 17, 2009. The Recovery Act is an unprecedented effort to jumpstart our economy, create or save millions of jobs, and put a down payment on addressing long-neglected challenges so our country can thrive in the 21st century.

Applying for Recovery Act Administrative Supplements for Summer Research

Recovery Act administrative supplements for summer research may be requested by current NLM grantees who wish to accelerate the pace and achievement of their research within the scope of the funded research aims. Administrative supplements for summer research will encourage students to seriously pursue research careers in biomedical informatics, as well as provide short-term research experiences in biomedical informatics to elementary, middle school, and high school teachers, community college faculty, and faculty from non-research intensive institutions.

Funding decisions for NLM Recovery Act administrative supplements for summer research will be made by staff of the Extramural Programs Division of NLM. Administrative supplements for summer research may be for one or two years.

To apply for an administrative supplement for summer research, follow the instructions in NIH Announces the Availability of Recovery Act Funds for Administrative Supplements Providing Summer Research Experiences for Students and Science Educators (NOT-OD-09-060).

Applications must be sent to the following NLM Grants Management Officer. Electronic applications are strongly preferred, by emailing to moweryd@mail.nih.gov with an attachment in PDF format (signature of the institutional official must be clearly visible). Applicants who choose to submit applications in paper format should mail one original paper copy to the address below (with original signatures of the institutional official). Applications should contain the components specified in NOT-OD-09-056.

Areas of Scientific Priority

Recovery Act administrative supplements for summer research must support the goals of the Recovery Act. Preference will be given to administrative supplements for summer research requests that accomplish one or more of the following:

  • Summer informatics research opportunities for high school and undergraduate students
  • Summer informatics research opportunities for science educators (e.g., elementary, middle school and high school teachers, community college faculty, and faculty from non-research intensive institutions)

Funding Priorities

Overall, NLM expects to devote up to $1 million to this Recovery Act administrative supplement for summer research program into basic and applied research in biomedical informatics.

Grantees may only apply to NLM for one Recovery Act supplement per grant, in each of the three types of Recovery Act supplement programs (if the grant is eligible for those supplement programs). The cost ceiling for Recovery Act administrative supplements for summer research (for the entire supplement, not per year) is $250,000 total costs or 50% of total cost of the most recent grant award, whichever is smaller.

For this initiative, NLM will accept requests for administrative supplements for summer research to active NLM grants of the following types (activity codes):

  • P41
  • R00
  • R01
  • R03
  • R21
  • R41
  • R42
  • R43

NLM will not accept requests for administrative supplements for summer research to the following types of grants (activity codes):

  • F37
  • G08
  • G13
  • K22
  • K99
  • R13
  • RL1
