Dream Anatomy Film Series Kicks Off October 17
The Body in a Cinematic Vein
In conjunction with NLM's Dream Anatomy exhibition, the Library is hosting a free public film series, Cinematic Dream Anatomy. This film series offers a mixture of imaginative popular movies with anatomical themes.
All movies will be shown with open captions in the Lister Hill Center Auditorium (first floor, Bldg. 38A). A sign language interpreter will be available for the introduction of each film. Please call 301-496-5963 to verify show dates, times and titles, as well as possible last-minute changes in NIH security measures.
Persons with NIH parking tags can park in Lot 41, behind Building 41. Visitors are encouraged to come by Metro. Take the Red Line to the Medical Center station. As you exit the station via escalator, bear left and follow the sidewalk in the direction of the Natcher Building (bldg. 45). Lister Hill (Bldg. 38A) is a high-rise located across the street from Natcher (across Center Drive).
Because of heightened security, visitors who are driving will only have access to the National Institutes of Health campus through two entrances: (1) Rockville Pike and South Drive; and (2) Old Georgetown Road and Center Drive. Please allow time to show a photo ID and have your car searched by security officers. When: 6:30 P.M. on Thursdays, October 17 through November 14, 2002, except October 31 when the movie will show at 12:30 P.M. Schedule may change without notice.
Where: Lister Hill Auditorium (bldg. 38A), 8600 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, Maryland. Seating is on a first come first served basis.

Fantastic Voyage (director Richard Fleischer, 1966, 100 minutes, PG)
Fantastic Voyage is the original psychedelic inner-space adventure. When a brilliant scientist falls into a coma with an inoperable blood clot in the brain, a surgical team embarks on a top-secret journey to the center of the mind in a high-tech military submarine shrunk to microbial dimensions. The anatomical body turns into a dream world: scuba-diving surgeons battle white blood cells, tap the lungs to replenish their oxygen supply, and shoot the aorta like daredevil surfers. Starring Stephen Boyd and Raquel Welch.

Osmosis Jones (directors Bobby Farrelly and Peter Farrelly, 2001, 96 minutes, PG)
About two-thirds animation and one-third live action, Osmosis Jones is a cop movie spoof set inside the human body. The title character is a street-smart white blood cell, working as an agent for the immune system. He and Drix, an over-the-counter cold capsule, are reluctant partners fighting what appears to be a minor infection in a character named Frank (Bill Murray). Osmosis discovers that Frank has really contracted a fatal virus, Thrax. He battles a corrupt body politic led by a venal mayor to save Frank's life and win the affection of the mayor's aide, Leah. Starring Bill Murray, Chris Rock, David Hyde Pierce, Laurence Fishburne, and William Shatner.

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (director Charles Barton, 1948, 83 minutes, NR)
A sharply written parody of 1930s horror films, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein is a tale of two baggage handlers--Chick Young (Bud Abbott) and Wilbur Grey (Lou Costello)--who undertake to transport corpses. However, when they receive coffins purporting to contain the remains of both Count Dracula and Frankenstein's monster, trouble is on its way. Starring Bud Abbott, Lou Costello and Béla Lugosi.

Gross Anatomy (director Thom Eberhardt, 1989, 109 minutes, PG-13)
Gross Anatomy is a comedy drama about an independent, freewheeling med student enrolled in the toughest course in the curriculum--Gross Anatomy. With his style at odds with everything around him, he must prove himself to a demanding professor and a lab partner who won't let anything interfere with her plans--not even the fact that he's fallen in love with her. Starring Matthew Modine, Christine Lahti and Daphne Zuniga.

Innerspace (director Joe Dante, 1987, 120 minutes, PG)
This clever comedy about a miniaturization experiment stars Martin Short as a hypochondriac, Dennis Quaid as a miniaturized test pilot who is accidentally injected into him, and Meg Ryan as an investigative reporter who is the test pilot's girlfriend. Ryan and Short try to defeat bad guys who want to steal the miniaturization technology as Quaid travels through the complicated systems of the human body. Starring Dennis Quaid and Martin Short.
