Groundwater-Surface Water Exchange Fluxes and Relation to Nutrient and Mercury Cycling in the Northern EvergladesProject Chief: Judson W. Harvey Knowledge about hydrologic exchange between surface water and groundwater is critical to understanding the movement of water and dissolved constituents (solutes) in the Everglades. The goal of the present project is to quantify vertical seepage of water and solutes at study sites in the northern part of the Everglades. The two sites selected for the investigation are the Everglades Nutrient Removal Area (ENR) and Water Conservation Area 2A (WCA2A). These sites are the location of ongoing research projects concerned with movement and transformation of nutrients and mercury. Research results are to be used by the South Florida Water Management District to guide in the planning and management of Stormwater Treatment Areas, that is, large constructed wetlands designed to remove excess nutrients from agricultural drainage.
