Training and Capacity Building
IEIP sites continually build capacity for public health and provide training for local and U.S. public health personnel.
Objectives of this activity are:
- To enhance laboratory capacity by developing a laboratory network for the detection and control of emerging infectious diseases
- To support training of local scientists including both laboratorians and epidemiologists
- To develop rapid response teams.
IEIP sites have trained local personnel (clinicians, epidemiologists, scientists, laboratorians) in a variety of public health methods including avian and pandemic influenza rapid response procedures, risk communication techniques, and molecular diagnostics. Additionally, some of the IEIP sites have hosted workshops and included regional partners and other IEIP sites. In 2007, IEIP laboratory staff also met at CDC in Atlanta for a week-long, laboratory workshop on respiratory diagnostics, and additional laboratory and surveillance workshops are planned for 2008.
