Serkan Bozkurt

My main focus is to conduct scientific research using GIS analysis, GIS visualizations, internet mapping, and database management technologies. I build bridges between the spatial data and scientists, and also between scientific results and the public. I’m helping scientists to enhance scientific research using GIS analysis, 3D visualizations, and animations.

I was a visiting scientist at USGS between 2002 to 2006. One of the latest project that I participated is the Tokyo Project, which is a Swiss Re CRADA. In addition to my GIS analysis and visualizations services in this project, I was also the lead scientist on a key aspect of the project. I investigated the probability of earthquake shaking, by statistically and spatially analyzing the past 400 years of shaking records in and around Tokyo/Kanto region. This is an innovative departure from common practice and fully integrates GIS mapping with statistical analyses. More information about the Tokyo Project can be found in this URL.

In addition to Tokyo Project I also participated in several other USGS projects. Some of the highlights of my work can be seen in the Special Features section of this website. In this section you’ll see one of my GIS visualizations that became a cover image of Nature Journal, an interactive Internet mapping system for GPS stations in Southern California, and a GIS visualization depicting earthquake risk in California with a comparison to 2002 Denali Earthquake. This visualization is awarded as "Image of the Week” by the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS).

I also developed and maintained our group and project websites that serve to over half-million visitors per year. The web site is the major portal by which we serve the public and other scientists; it includes technical and non-technical summaries of our research, our published reports, press articles about our work, also materials for students and teachers.

I participated in documentary films; 'Earthquake Storms' (BBC, 2003), 'Nature Tech, Earthquakes' (The History Channel, 2003), and an IMAX film, 'Forces of Nature' (National Geographic, 2004), which was released in summer 2004 Nationwide on IMAX theaters. Click here to see an article about my work and 'Forces of Nature', which published in Turk of America Journal.

Now I work as a GIS Professional at Geomatrix Consultants, Inc. in Oakland, CA
