Annual Status Report - Alabama Youth Alliance

I. Alliance Background

Overview:
OSHA, AL/MS - ASSE, ALSDE C/TE, and Safe State hereby form an Alliance to provide career/technical
education teachers, students and others with information, guidance and access to training resources
that will help them protect career/technical education students’ and educators’ health and safety,
particularly in reducing and preventing youth workers exposure to the prevalent work hazards in the
workplace and school laboratory environment.
II. Implementation Team Membership:
Representatives from OSHA, AL and MS Chapters of the ASSE, the Alabama Dept of Education
Career/Technical Education Section (ALSDE C/TE) and Safe State Consultation Program. These meeting
were conducted as scheduled on: 11/17/06, 1/11/07, 4/17/07, 10/4 - 5/07, 1/8/08, and 1/28/08.
Evaluation Period:
October 25, 2006, thru January 31, 2008.
III. Events and Products
Training and Education
Events
- On July 19 – 20, 2007, the group conducted the OSHA 10-hour safety and health training course
at the Annual Educators Conference in Huntsville, AL, for several Career/Technical instructors.
- On May 7, 2007, the OSHA Birmingham Area Office - CAS conducted two OSHA information sessions
for Gifted Program students in the 4th through 12th grade at Moulton High School in Moulton,
Alabama.
Products
Outreach and Communication
Events
- A brochure outlining safety and health rules for young worker was distributed to small business
employers and school counselors throughout the State.
- An estimated 120 high school vocational students attended free safety training at Safe Day in
Dothan, Alabama. The event was sponsored by the Wiregrass Alliance.
- The Alabama Youth Alliance assisted in the promotion of the March 29, 2007, 2nd Annual Central
Alabama Construction Safety Conference in Montgomery, Alabama.
Products
- A brochure outlining safety and health rules for young worker was developed by the group for
small businesses and school counselors.
- The Alabama Youth Alliance was highlight in the Anniston Star, which is the Anniston, Alabama,
newspaper. The article, "OSHA workplace safety course taught at career technical center," was
published in the 11/03/2006 edition of the paper.
Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health
Events
- On January 11, 2007, the Alabama Youth Alliance was recognized with a formal proclamation from
the State Board of Education, which was signed by Governor Bob Riley and others. This resolution
commended the group’s efforts.
IV. Results
V. Upcoming Milestones in FY 2008
- Provide Train-the-Trainer class for vocational school instructors in the construction industry
field.
- Provide Train-the-Trainer class for vocational school instructors in the general industry
field.
- Assist local technical schools throughout the State in providing OSHA 10-hour to students.
- Participate in the Annual Skills USA Conference in Birmingham, Alabama, by exhibiting and
providing safety and health information to students, instructors and other attendees.
