Region IV's OSHA/Wiregrass Safety Alliance
Reaches out to Small Businesses

Since signing their Alliance on January 21, 2003, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Region IV and the Wiregrass Safety Alliance continue to work together to help small businesses in the Wiregrass Area of Alabama, Georgia and Florida with no-cost safety and health training and information.

The Wiregrass Safety Alliance consists of the following organizations that serve the Wiregrass area: The Dothan Chamber of Commerce, the Small Business Development Center at Troy State University, the Wiregrass Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers and the Dothan/Houston County Emergency Management Agency.

Through the Alliance, OSHA's Region IV Mobile Area Office is working with the Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) in the Wiregrass Area to provide tools and training opportunities for small employers. On June 16, 2003 OSHA Region IV Compliance Assistance Specialist William Bice gave a presentation to the SBDC State Convention of the Wiregrass Safety Alliance. During the conference, twenty-five SBDC coordinators were given an overview of the OSHA/Wiregrass Alliance's outreach efforts to reach small employers.

On May 15, 2003, fifteen lending institutions were trained on the Alliance and the various safety and health training courses available to small businesses in the Wiregrass Area. It is anticipated that the participating lending institutions will share this training information with their customers. On June 19, 2003 the second Alliance "Recordkeeping Training" was given by Mr. Bice to thirteen employer representatives.

Two small business tools, developed through the Alliance, are now available on the OSHA website:
  • A flyer provides small businesses with information on a wide range of no-cost safety and health training available in the Wiregrass area.

  • The Wiregrass Safety Alliance provided safety and health expertise to the development of a Small Business Tool Kit, a comprehensive manual for small employers in the Wiregrass area.
Hoping to reach more small employers, the OSHA Region IV/Wiregrass Alliance has plans to create a public service announcement on the Alliance and other efforts to reach small business to be aired later this year on television and radio stations throughout the Wiregrass Area.
