Technical Information
An important component of EPA's efforts to reduce any remaining unacceptable risks is to work with States and local and tribal organizations to understand the risks at the local level, target the problem areas, and tailor reduction strategies to the situations in those areas. This database has been compiled to provide a resource of planned,completed, and ongoing community level air toxics assessments across the country. By sharing information about efforts at the local level to measure, understand, and address air toxics emissions, this database will help ensure that communities designing and implementing their own assessments will be able to build upon past efforts and lessons learned.
Information in the Database
You will find the following information on each assessment:

Features
Project List. You can organize the list of all projectss according to title, status, State, or time period of the study by clicking the arrows on the header rows. Click on the project title to view the abstract.
Search Options. You can use the query function to search the full text of the abstracts for key words. You can also search for projects of various pollutants using a pull-down menu to identify the pollutants of interest, or for a particular risk type (such as acute, cancer, or indoor air) and assessment type (such as human inhalation). Lastly, you may search the database by keyword. Keywords are listed in a table below the search bar. These keywords have been assigned to abstracts based on the most current information. In the results, you will see a list of studies that meet your search criteria.
Where you live. You will find a map showing the locations of the projects in the database. You can click on these locations to reveal project titles by region or nationally.
Report Features. You can print a list of projects, as well as all or part of the individual project summary.
Download Completed Reports. These documents are completed reports for some of the studies listed in the database and only represent a subset of the on-going or past studies. Click on the "Studies" link for more information on viewing and printing abstracts. Please note that some copies are not in a refined or published format. In these cases, please contact the person or organization listed in the contact information of the assessment summary for the refined format.
**Depending on the type and speed of your internet connection, you may experience difficulties downloading large reports. For example, if you are using a dial-up 56K modem, a file size of 20 MB would take approximately 2 hours to download.**

Instructions for Printing Abstracts
1. Open up the database and go to the list feature. Select the project title you are interested in. Then select the printer friendly version of that project.
2. Save the printer friendly version, which is in html format, to your computer.
3. Open the saved file in Word. Then save that file as a Word document. This file is now available for printing and editing.
This can be done successfully in WordPerfect 11 as well. However, this procedure does not work well in older versions of WordPerfect.
NOTE: This exercise provides the printer friendly version of the abstract as it appears on the web. People that need to add information to sections that were previously "empty" can do so under the section heading. However, if they want to see the prompts that describe the type of information we are specifically seeking in that section, they need to refer to the blank abstract report form that is on the website.

The Air Toxics Community Assessment and Risk Reduction Projects Database is a collection of numerous independent studies (past and on-going) each with an individual purpose, timeframe, scope, and methodology. Because of the differences among the studies, EPA has not attempted to summarize, consolidate or analyze the results. There has been no attempt to lay out a quality assurance plan in advance of the studies as a group, to standardize the results, or to conduct peer review of the studies as a group. The variability and limitations of each study should be kept in mind when interpreting the results of that study, or when comparing study results.
