On this Web site, you will find descriptions of community-based air toxics projects designed to assess and address health and environmental issues at the local level. EPA supports air toxics projects in about thirty communities across the nation to help inform and empower citizens to make local decisions concerning the health of their communities. Four example projects are highlighted in the box to the right. The complete list of projects can be found under the Project Database.

Air Toxics Community Assessment and Risk Reduction Projects Database - Abstracts and technical documents about the community projects are available in this database.

Project List - Complete list of community assessment studies.

Search Database - Search by pollutant, risk/assessment type, or keyword.

Report Features - One report feature allows you to generate and print lists of assessment studies. You may generate a complete list of the assessments or a list of ongoing and complete assessments, or create printer-friendly study abstracts for all or part of each assessment. Options are available on each individual assessment. Click on the Completed Reports link to view and download full study reports in .pdf format. Another report feature allows you to view and print keyword summary tables by region. Most studies have keywords associated with the Project Type & Study Design, Risk/Exposure Type & Sources, and Outcomes & Reduction Activity Goals. Click on the section and region links to view and print the tables.

Completed Reports - These documents are completed reports for some of the studies listed in the database and only represent a subset of the on-going or past studies. For the complete list of studies, see the Project List.

Abstract Report Form - If you would like to submit a new assessment or risk reduction project, you may download a blank Abstract Report Form in either Word Perfect or Microsoft Word format.

Healthy Air: A Community and Business Leaders Guide is a collection of information sheets about ways communities can work together to improve their air quality. It is designed to be used by community groups and their business partners as a planning guide.

Community Action for a Renewed Environment (CARE) - The new CARE program is a competitive grant program that offers an innovative way for communities to take action to reduce toxic pollution.

The Improving Air Quality in Your Community web site features activities for reducing both indoor and outdoor pollution, including diesel engine retrofit programs, improving air quality in local schools, and pollution prevention options for small businesses. These projects have a successful track record: they were previously put into action by state and local governments across the country. This site includes information about the costs to establish and maintain each project, and how local communities can apply for EPA grants to kick-start their activities.

The Collision Repair Campaign describes one of EPA's efforts to address health threats through a two-year campaign to drastically reduce auto body emissions at the national level. Each EPA regional office involved in the campaign has worked with their respective partners (e.g. community, industry, small businesses, etc.) to significantly reduce human and environmental exposure to air toxics from auto body shops. This site includes information about those regional efforts as well as helpful links to voluntary and regulatory resources.
