Boeing North American, Space Systems Division, Downey, Calif., is being awarded a $16,367,000 increment as part of a not-to-exceed $49,800,000 cost-plus-fixed-fee completion letter contract modification to a current contract for three additional Kill Vehicle (KV) flight hardware units which will mitigate schedule risk for potential increases in the Ground Based Interceptor (GBI) schedule. The development of an exoatmospheric interceptor was an essential element of the Strategic Defense Initiative strategy. The development of an exoatmospheric ground based interceptor was also central to various defense system options under consideration for protecting and defending the continental United States. Work will be performed in Downey, Calif., and is expected to be completed by March 31, 2000. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This is a sole source contract initiated on Sept. 16, 1997. The contracting activity is the U.S. Army Space & Missile Defense Command, Huntsville, Ala. (DASG60-90-C-0165).
