Set-top Boxes for Consumers

(Are you a partner? For Partners)

What is a Set-top Box?

A Set-top box is a cable, satellite, Internet Protocol or other device whose primary function is to receive television signals from a specific source and deliver them to a consumer display and or recording device, such as a television or DVR.

Set-top boxes that have earned the ENERGY STAR are at least 30 percent more efficient than conventional models.

If all set-top boxes sold in the U.S. met the ENERGY STAR specification, the savings in energy costs will grow to about $2 billion each year and greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by the equivalent of greenhouse gas emissions from about 2.5 million vehicles.

What should you know about choosing ENERGY STAR qualified Set-top Boxes?

Most set-top boxes are given to consumers as part of their contract with a service provider, rather than sold independently at retail stores. So, when you are deciding on a cable or satellite service, be sure to ask the service provider for an ENERGY STAR qualified set-top box.

If you currently have cable or satellite service, check with your service provider to find out what, if any, upgrade options are available. ENERGY STAR Partners who provide cable and satellite services may be able to provide newly qualified boxes as part of your service.

Why choose products that have earned the Government's ENERGY STAR?

Products that earn the ENERGY STAR must meet strict energy-efficiency guidelines set by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Department of Energy (DOE). Saving energy prevents pollution, too! So, by choosing ENERGY STAR, you are helping to prevent global warming and promote cleaner air without sacrificing the product quality and performance you expect.
