Research Project: Identification and Utilization of Resistance to Soybean Rust

Location: Soybean Genomics and Improvement

Project Number: 1275-21000-263-22
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Jan 01, 2006
End Date: Dec 31, 2008

Objective:
The objective of this research is to determine the genome positions of newly discovered genetic loci (genes) that provide resistance to soybean rust.

Approach:
The F2-derived lines from populations created by crossing a soybean rust susceptible soybean genotype with a genotype that carries a new gene for resistance to soybean rust will be tested with 150-200 genetic markers. These markers will include both simple sequence repeat (SSR) and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genetic markers. At the same time, the F2-derived lines will be inoculated with a soybean rust strain that is appropriate to test for the presence of the segregating rust resistance gene. The genetic marker and phenotypic data will be combined to identify the locations of rust resistance gene. F3 of F4-derived lines will be tested in a similar manner to verify the presence of rust resistance genes detected in the F2-derived lines.
