Overview of Pesticides Grants

Food Quality Protection Act/Strategic Agricultural Initiative Grant Program: Request for Applications-FY 2009

EPA Region 1 Pesticide Program is seeking applications from eligible organizations that will facilitate the implementation of the Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA). The program supports efforts to reduce the exposure to toxic pesticides through the adoption of production agriculture pest management practices that transition away from the use of high-risk pesticides in minor crops.

The in-field adoption by farmers of already identified potential low-risk integrated crop or pest management tools and strategies is a priority. The project or projects selected for funding will work towards achieving the adoption of reduced-risk alternatives and /or ecologically-based IPM or biologically integrated farming approaches that are economical.

For this competition, the EPA Region 1 SAI Program has approximately $100,000 available for assistance awards under this Request for Applications (RFA).

Pesticide Program and Enforcement Grants

Under FIFRA, EPA is given authority to enter into cooperative agreements with states to implement the federal pesticide regulatory requirements at the state/local level. EPA supports the cooperative agreements by providing technical and financial support to the designated State Lead Agencies. The grants support both enforcement/compliance and non-enforcement programs such as applicator certification and training, ground water protection, worker protection, and endangered species protection. Total grants for pesticide program and enforcement for the six New England States in FY'98 was more than 1.8 million dollars.

For more information on pesticides enforcement grants, see EPA National's FIFRA, State and Tribal Assistance Grant Program Web site.

Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program (PESP) Grants

Each year since 1996, the Office of Pesticide Program's Biopesticides and Pollution Prevention Division has supported a regional grant program under the Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program (PESP). The PESP program represents a cooperative effort of the EPA, USDA, and FDA to reduce the use of and risks from pesticides. Under this program EPA provides funding to support projects which promote reduced pesticide use and risk in both agricultural and non-agricultural settings. States and federally recognized tribes are eligible to submit project proposals for PESP grants; other organizations can partner with an eligible state or tribe to receive funds. Individual grant awards are $45,000 or less.
