McClellan AFB: 1st Privatized Cleanup
Feature Story: McClellan Air Force Base Cleanup and Redevelopment
Transcript
(1:05 min)Narrator:
In late August U.S. EPA and other partners got together to sign an historic agreement for the imminent cleanup and redevelopment of a WWII-era military base outside of Sacramento, CA.
EPA’s Keith Takata:
We're here at McClellan Air Force Base, and we're celebrating the very first privatization of a Superfund site in the country. We've been trying to do privatization for over a decade. Cleanups will be faster, cheaper and more efficient, and we hope this will be a model for other bases across the country.
EPA’s Kathleen Johnson:
We think this will bring about efficiencies in both the cleanup and the redevelopment. This was brought about by a very close, effective collaboration between a number of parties including Sacramento County, the Air Force, EPA, DTSC, and the Water Board.
Narrator:
The signing ceremony at McClellan, first designated as a Superfund site in 1987, means the site will move back into productive reuse more quickly and rejuvenate the local economy.
