Arizona Waste to Energy

Forming Partnerships to Develop Renewable Energy

On October 24, 2007, U.S. EPA and AZ Department of Agriculture held a workshop in Phoenix, AZ. Over 70 attendees of diverse backgrounds shared information on moving biomass electricity projects forward in the greater Phoenix area.

EPA Continuing Efforts

Hassayampa Landfill Superfund Site

As part of the Cleanup-Clean Air initiative, EPA is working to develop renewable energy near the Hassayampa Landfill Superfund site. This site is located near sources of agricultural residue; making it a candidate for a biomass-to-energy system. Solar power may also be a viable alternative. EPA plans to begin a feasibility study soon. Check back for updates!

Efforts to Increase Overall Renewable Generation

EPA would like to continue and strengthen the relationships made through the Arizona Waste-to-Energy Workshop. Currently, Cleanup-Clean Air staff are able to provide information and facilitation where needed. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords introduced the Renewable Energy Assistance Act, H.R. 3807, in October 2007. The bill aims to extend and improve tax incentives for investing in renewable energy and energy-efficient technology.

Interested in Biomass Energy Projects?

Logo for the AgStar program

The AgSTAR Program is a voluntary effort sponsored by the U.S. EPA, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the U.S. Department of Energy. The program provides information and tools designed to assist livestock producers (typically swine and dairy farms) in the evaluation and implementation of methane recovery systems appropriate for confined livestock facilities that handle manure as liquids and slurries.

The AgStar website includes valuable information, such as directories of consultants, developers, manufacturers/distributors of covers, manufacturers/distributors of engines and tanks, commodity organizations, and general energy services. Success stories and upcoming events are also available.
