Region 4: Superfund

Cleaning up sites and active facilities with contamination problems or abandoned hazardous waste sites or preparing the land for redevelopment happens in a variety of governmental programs. The following links highlight programs and activities within Region 4, at EPA, and with EPA’s partners at the federal and state level.

Region 4 Programs and Activities

• Brownfields - Reuse of abandoned or underutilized property with real or perceived contamination.
• Land Revitalization - Restoration of waste sites that have been cleaned up to allow them to serve as productive economic and greenspace resources.
• Leaking Underground Storage Tanks - Release response and corrective action for underground storage tank systems.
• RCRA Corrective action - Cleanups of non-Superfund hazardous waste sites.
• RCRA Non-Hazardous Wastes - Cleanups on non-hazardous waste sites.

Headquarters Programs and Activities

• Environmental Justice - Fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.
• Toxics/Toxic Releases - Information on toxic chemical releases and waste management activities reported annually by industries and federal facilities.
• Working with Tribal Governments - enhance the Superfund role of States, Indian Tribes, and Local governments through education, networking, communication, and a streamlined reimbursement process, and through the transfer of technical assistance, financial support, and responsibility for NPL sites and the promotion of voluntary cleanup.
• Mining and Environmental Cleanup - As new and existing mining operations expand, abandoned mines continue to have impacts on human health and the environment, EPA continues to work with mining stakeholders, including other federal agencies, states, tribes, local groups, and industry, to promote environmental protection goals.
• Superfund Initiatives and Partnerships - Cleanup and information resources and partnerships for the hazardous waste remediation community and other interested stakeholders.

Outside Programs and Activities

• State Programs in Region 4 - Sites not addressed by EPA as Superfund or RCRA sites are often times managed by or the responsibility of the state in which the site is located.
• Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) - ATSDR is responsible for conducting health assessments of Superfund sites. It also maintains toxicological profiles of many contaminants.
• Treatment Technology Initiatives and Parternships
• National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences - Research on health effects of hazardous substances that aid in Superfund assessment and cleanup decisions.
