What are mobile sources?

Mobile sources are sources of air pollution that move, or can be moved, such as cars, aircraft, and locomotives. Mobile sources are typically classified as either on-road or nonroad. Examples of on-road mobile sources are cars, trucks, and motorcycles. Nonroad mobile sources are construction equipment, marine vessels, lawn and garden equipment, and recreational vehicles such as snowmobiles and jetskis, to name a few.

EPA Region 4 works together with EPA's Office of Transportation and Air Quality (OTAQ) to implement various programs and strategies aimed at reducing emissions of harmful pollutants from mobile sources. The region also works closely with state, local, and tribal air and transportation agencies to further EPA's mission to protect human health and the environment.
