Louisiana Mayor helps EPA help communities

Mayor Jamie Mayo of Monroe, Louisiana, recently attended the Local Government Advisory Committee meeting in Washington, DC.

The committee helps EPA strengthen its partnerships with local and state governments by building their capacity to deliver environmental services and programs. Since it was chartered in 1993, the Local Government Advisory Committee has helped provide citizens across the country with more efficient and effective environmental protection at the community, state and federal level.

As a representative for EPA Region 6, Mayor Mayo joined 28 other committee members from around the country, including elected and appointed local officials, several state representatives, environmental interest groups and labor interests. One of the highlights of the recent workshop, according to Mayor Mayo, was meeting and speaking with EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson.

"I feel honored to represent Louisiana and EPA Region 6," he said. "I'm looking forward to working with the members of the committee and providing advice to the Administrator on implementing policies and goals from the local government's perspective."

The committee addressed several top issues during the meeting, including climate change, economic stimulus, energy efficiency, watersheds and coastlines, and small-communities issues including how to help smaller communities be more green.

Mayor Mayo reports, " I have already implemented one of the programs we learned about at the conference. Beginning this summer, the city of Monroe will expand its summer youth job program by hiring 25 young men and women as part of its Green Teens group. These young people will perform green jobs which will help keep Monroe beautiful and protect our local environment."
