Technical Abstract: Accurate information on the nutrient composition of dietary supplements is essential for determining their contribution to dietary intake. This year, the preliminary release of dietary supplement composition information is now available for researchers' use in evaluating diet and health interrelationships in the U.S. population. The Office of Dietary Supplements and the USDA Nutrient Data Laboratory have been collaborating on this work. This publicly available database will facilitate the assessment of vitamin and mineral intakes from dietary supplements as a complement to the nutrient database for foods known as the USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference. The research plan, key findings, and preliminary data release will be highlighted in this session, with an interactive component demonstrating the DSID. The DSID will ultimately permit more accurate estimates of the contribution of dietary supplements to total nutrient intake and also permit the assessment of variability among and within products' nutrient value.
