2008 Major Accomplishments:
· Completed restructuring of Center into two MUs, with hiring of two new Research Leaders
· Organized, developed, reviewed and submitted 5 new research projects and submitted to Office of Scientific Quality Review (OSQR)
· Completed construction of indirect calorimeter, installation of cognitive chambers, and building improvements using remaining construction funds
· Established a new nutritional metabolomics core facility
2008 Stakeholder/partnership outreach accomplishments:
· Participated in UC Davis Symposium on Fruit & Vegetable Health Claims
· Held meetings with many stakeholders including Unilever, California Institute of Food and Agricultural Research (CIFAR), Physics Ventures, CA Table Grape Commission
· Collaborated in research with CA Strawberry Commission, national Dairy Council, Dairy Management Inc., Beverage Institute, American Egg Board, NIH-funded Health Disparities Center of Excellence in Nutritional Genomics at UC-Davis, Diabetes Action Research, Martek Biosciences
· Served as advisors to CA Strawberry Commission, National Dairy Council, Cadbury Schweppes, Doctors Without Borders, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UC Davis Center for Fruit & Vegetable Quality, UC Davis Foods for Health Executive Committee, M&M Mars, Mead Johnson, World Health Organization, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
· Served on grant panels for USDA, NIH, National Dairy Council, American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association
· Co-edited Journal of Nutrition Supplement for proceedings of WHNRC co-sponsored International Tree Nut Conference
Further Accomplishments:
All 12 Research Scientists and the Center Director hold UC Davis adjunct faculty appointments, mostly in the Nutrition Department. Most are members of the Graduate Group in Nutritional Biology or other Graduate Groups at UC Davis. In Fiscal Year 2009, 17 graduate students will conduct their research with scientists in the Center.
The Center Director’s office provides administrative support for the WHNRC’s 2 Research Units, 12 Research Scientist positions, and scientific oversight for the WHNRC.
