The Library Square Festival of Art & Science is a bi-annual festival celebrating the intersections of art and science. Featuring hands-on educational activities built around a central theme, the festival is a free event for families to learn and create together. The festival is held at the downtown Main Library and occupies the library’s Urban Room and spreads out onto the plaza (weather permitting).
The first festival, “Discovering Earth’s Treasures” was held on September 25, 2008 and attracted over 600 people with activities related to fossils, minerals, and dinosaurs. There were 25 activities included painting watercolor pictures of the layers of the earth, sifting through sand for hidden treasures, and creating dinosaur sculptures.
The spring festival will be held on Saturday, April 25th and incorporates an Earth Day theme: Creating a Cleaner Future. We are currently looking for organizations who want to join in the festival and offer an activity. As a reminder, this is an active, fun event. The goal is to get families learning and talking about the environment and environmental protection through hands-on, science and/or art-based activities. While there is definitely a place for providing information about your organization or issue, the purpose of the festival is not about just telling people about environmental problems, but inspiring them to create solutions.
