Recreation and Public Access
The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area is visited annually by thousands of people from the local community, as well as from across the U.S. and abroad. Most visitations are associated with tours of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum or organized athletics at the Jupiter Lighthouse Park.
This current planning effort will address the additional needs for public access to natural areas and meld resource protection and restoration activities with opportunities for compatible passive recreation.
- The Town of Jupiter received a Recreation and Public Purposes Act lease in 1998 and a patent was presented to the Town by the Secretary of the Interior in October 2004 for Lighthouse Park.
- Jupiter Lighthouse Park has been completely renovated with new ball fields and parking facilities and continues to host active athletic programs.
- The Jupiter-Tequesta Athletic Association (JTAA) registers approximately 1,500 youth soccer players throughout the year. A large percentage of the league’s practices and games are played at Lighthouse Park.
- The JTAA registers approximately 250 youth lacrosse players throughout the year. A large percentage of the league’s practices and games are played at Lighthouse Park.
- There are four tennis courts open to the public from dusk to dawn. These courts are very popular due to the picturesque lighthouse which towers the courts.
- The Lighthouse Park parking lot is a staging area to cyclist groups who ride U.S. 1 and Jupiter Island.
- The U.S. Coast Guard has closed public access along the Indian River Lagoon/Intracoastal Waterway for security, liability and site protection reasons.
