St. Paul Island: TPA Site 7c NMFS Fuel Barge C

Barge C is in fragments at the base of black bluff on St. Paul Island
Barge C

Barge C was supplying fuel to St. George Island in 1963. During a night storm the barge broke free of its mooring and drifted 40 miles and came aground on south side of Reef Point on St. Paul Island. After more than 30 years a severe Bering Sea storm refloated the barge causing it to drift to the base of Black Bluffs.

Thereafter, other storms pounded the barge breaking it into numerous fragments. These fragments were removerd in July of 2000.  No significant contamination was found in the area after removal actions, and the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation granted NOAA no further action status for this site in 2001.
