Responsibilities
- responsible for laboratory analytical services, site/project level data quality assurance, data management and integration
- provides both routine and non-routine laboratory analysis
- plays a major role in quality assurance of all Regional data collection and analysis
The work is organized into 2 branches:
- accredited by the National Laboratory Accreditation Program to perform analyses of a wide array of contaminants in drinking water, waste water and solid and chemical materials
- primary responsibility for all analytical, quality control and other tasks related to analyzing environmental samples for chemical and microbiological contaminants
- certifies state laboratories for Safe Drinking Water Act chemistry and microbiological methods
- oversees state Safe Drinking Water Act chemistry and microbiological laboratory certification programs
- provides technical assistance and training to state agencies regarding laboratory practices, techniques, and management
- provides technical assistance and support to Regional programs regarding methods, detection limits, data results and interpretation, sampling and analysis requirements, etc.
- supports regional criminal investigations and other enforcement actions with sample analysis and interpretation of results and expert witness testimony
- manages the acquisition and oversight of laboratory analytical services for Regional program offices
- provides technical and administrative support to the Superfund Contract Laboratory Program
- provides technical support, assistance and oversight of environmental data collection activities
- provides quality assurance support of field and program activities through review of Quality Assurance Project Plans, Sampling and Analysis Plans and work plans
- reviews and assesses environmental data
- provides other support to Regional programs and state agencies including training, lab audits and inspections, and other technical assistance
