Flood Water Precautions
EPA is cautioning the
public and all responders about the potential hazards associated
with flood waters.
Every effort should be made to limit contact
with flood water due to potentially elevated levels of contamination
associated with raw sewage and other hazardous substances.
Many areas in the mid-Atlantic states experience flooding or face the possibility of flooding--depending on weather conditions and proximity to rivers, streams, the ocean, lakes, ponds and reservoirs. State and local response agencies remain as primary emergency responders. If you or your family are at immediate risk, calling 9-1-1 is the quickest way to get local, county or state emergency help. Web links to and phone numbers for state emergency management agencies are in the box to the right side of this page.
EPA's flooding information web page has practical and important tips for avoiding health problems often caused by floods, such as:
- drinking water and food contamination
- cleanup of debris
- mold
- restoring septic systems
- restoring operations at water and wastewater treatment facilities
- proper placement of emergency generators
Other helpful information is available from the National Weather Service and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). At the request of emergency management agencies, EPA often assists by assessing damage to water and wastewater treatment facilities, and recommending remedial actions at these facilities and other waste management facilities.
